ATLAS is a four-year public high school located in District 30 in Queens that serves English Language Learners. The school enrolls about 950 students in grades 9-12. Newcomers is internationally recognized for the exceptional quality of teaching, learning, and support services for English Language Learners offered at the school. The outstanding educational program provides a pathway for newly arrived students to pursue their academic dreams.
Mission
Newcomers High School was designed to create a welcoming, affirming and supportive learning environment for immigrant Multilingual learners and their families. We strive to sustain rigorous, equitable and meaningful learning opportunities to ensure all our students are empowered to lead with empathy in our local and global communities. We aim to know our students well and provide them what they need to advance their goals and dreams while appreciating the richness of knowledge and experience they each bring with them to our community.
Vision
Newcomers HS is a high school where the linguistic and cultural identities of our Multilingual Learners and their families will be honored, elevated and affirmed. Our school will be a community resource where social emotional and academic supports are provided to ensure that all our students are able to optimize their potential, on their journey to college, career and civic readiness, while being empowered to recognize their role in our shared community.

Curriculum
Newcomers academic program is tailored to students' needs and interests. All students who recently immigrated to the United States are enrolled in an intensive English language support program. These students take various content courses in their native language and are enrolled in the Transitional Bilingual Program. Elective courses are offered in Theatre, Acting and Art. The following AP courses are offered: AP Calculus, AP English Language, AP Spanish Language, AP Spanish Literature, AP Chemistry, AP Biology (new offering in 2022-2023), AP Computer Science, and AP Psychology (new offering in 2022-2023). Students also take College Now courses through a partnership with LaGuardia Community College.
Grading Scale
AP classes are weighted 1.1, except AP World Language.

Graduation Requirements
44-credits are required for graduation. Students must earn 8 credits in English, 8 credits in Social Studies, 6 credits in Science (including labs), 6 credits in Math, 2 credits in the Arts, 2 credits in a Second Language, 5 credits in Health and Physical Education, and 7 elective credits. Additionally, students must pass at least five Regents exams with a 65 or higher. These exams include: English, Math, Global History, United States History, and Science.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
For help with filling out the FAFSA.
The following steps will provide you with information on how to apply for federal and New York State financial aid:

Collect Documents Parents’ and your income tax returns, Social Security numbers, W-2 form(s), and other records of income and assets. Tax information can be estimated and corrected later if a tax return has not yet been completed.

Get free information and assistance from school counselor, the Financial Aid Office at the college you plan to attend the U.S. Department of Education or call 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243).

TAP - after you finish your FAFSA, New York State residents should also complete the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)

Receive A Student Aid Report (SAR) - after completing your FAFSA. SAR shows the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
In order to receive an award from individual colleges, each college name/code must be listed on the student's FAFSA application.
